Working on bassoon can often feel like a daunting task because of the many perceived differences between it and other woodwinds. In this course we will cover the similarities and differences between bassoons and other woodwinds and learn how to tackle challenges that are unique to bassoon.
We will focus on wood preparation and ensuring the body of the bassoon seals perfectly. Then we will address padding, including pad preparation and modification, focusing on the boot joint where the majority of the challenges lie. Finally, we will discuss the set-up to make the bassoon as user friendly and comfortable as possible to play.
Attendees should bring a wood bassoon of reputable make (Fox, Schreiber, Puchner, Polisi, Moosmann or similar. Please try to avoid Selmer and Linton (we’ll talk about why)) with all pads removed and keys cleaned.
A set of pads fitting that instrument (Pisoni DBS80, Kraus 108, Ferree’s 103, Allied 410, or Music Medic Roo bassoon pads. Plan ahead, bassoon pads are hard to come by these days.)
An assortment of silencer materials (take note of thickness when stripping keys) I use Q2 felt, Tech Cork, ultrasuede, and natural cork *If you don't have some of these silence materials, NAPBIRT will have some available. Also, if driving, consider bringing your own contact cement.
Pad adhesive (I prefer the “White Adhesive Pellets” from Music Medic)
Hand tools that you use for woodwind work.

If you find yourself in a position in which you disagree with the clinician, we would ask that you be respectful to the clinician and your fellow audience members and not be disruptive in the clinic.
