Course Description

Does your shop have a lathe that you don't really know how to use or you're thinking of purchasing your first lathe but want to learn the basics first? The metal lathe is a versatile machine that can be used to repair band instruments, fabricate obsolete or missing parts as well as make tooling for many other repairs.

This course will focus on the safe implementation of fundamental lathe operations like turning, facing, drilling, boring, taper turning, and threading. These operations will be applied to the repair of musical instrument as well as for making simple tools and repair parts. In addition to these skills, students will learn the basics of hand grinding tool bits, setup, measuring and maintenance of the lathe.

So if you've ever wanted to make a clarinet tenon, make a ferrule for a trumpet slide, cut a slot for a carbon fiber band, turn a new post for that vintage saxophone or spin up a new pad cup, the lathe course could be for you. Students are encouraged to bring a practice project to learn on as well as safety glasses, 6" dial or digital caliper and apron.

Instructor

Matthew Slauson is a graduate of the Band Instrument Repair School at SUNY Morrisville, and has 35 years experience repairing musical instruments. Early in his career, he was employed by the Erick Brand Company and Fidelity Music where he fabricated tooling and specialized in tenon and socket repairs as well as making parts for brass instruments.

Matthew specializes in fabricating parts for obsolete and vintage instruments using lathes, mills, CNC and other metal working equipment in his home shop. In addition to the band instrument trade, Mr. Slauson has BS and MS degrees in Technology education. He was a master teacher trainer in Computer Integrated Manufacturing for PLTW where he has trained hundreds of teachers in robotics, CNC and manufacturing.

Currently, he is a member of the New York State Master Teachers program where he collaborates with a select group of STEM teachers to further their knowledge and serve as mentors to other teachers. In his spare time, he enjoys playing flute and piccolo in the community bands and hiking in the many beautiful state parks in New York.
